Monte da Moita Nova

The vibe at the hundred-year-old Moita Nova farm is costal, rural and serene, the Atlantic Ocean is a mere five minute walk through our green fields to the dunes. At night you can hear the waves and watch the sweep from the nearby lighthouse. Moita Nova was restored as a horse farm with a turismo by our friend and neighbour 30 years ago. Now our daughter Sara who started here by mucking out the stables on week-ends years ago has taken the reins. Settled at Moita and running daily operations she lovingly looks after the horses and shares a gregarious enthusiasm for this special Alentejo little corner by the sea. We have given the cottages and grounds a touch of TLC while the spirit and serenity of the place continues to welcome visitors who come to stay, relax, wander the dunes, swim in the sea, lounge by the pool or ride along the pristine cliffs. There are two main buildings, one thick adobe with two cottages and a family room for extra beds, the other with Sara’s living quarters and two more cottages. The fully equipped cottages are all traditional farm style with wood burning fireplaces and locally crafted weavings, baskets and tiles. Each cottage has its own table and chairs out front and a lounge space in the back. From the stables, ten horses are available for lessons and trail rides.

The Location

Monte de Moita Nova is located on Cabo Sardão, 800m from the village of Cavaleiro, about 200km south of Lisbon and 130km northwest of Faro. The village of Cavaleiro, which has several small shops, cafes, and a restaurant, is a 10 minute walk away. If you decide to turn toward the sea (a 5 minute walk) you will find our small but notable beach, Praia da Carraca, accessible by stairway.

Continuing along the cliffs you can find isolated coves and beaches accessible down fishermen tracks for experienced climbers. At 8, 12 or 18km from Moita Nova you find the bigger beaches of Almograve, Zambujeira do Mar, and Vila Nova de Milfontes, all of which are awarded the Bandeira Azul designation for their exceptional water quality and facilities. These beachtowns are bigger and offer more services and numerous restaurantes, cafes and shops. We know the surrounding area very well and can give you tips on special attractions to visit and interesting things to do.
